Agata Duda at funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. What made her stand out?
i.pl: The First Lady appeared at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in a stylish, obviously black outfit. However, few people realize that styling for such an occasion requires adapting to certain rules, protocol. Can you explain what it looks like?
Dorota Goldpoint: People observing this event from the outside are noticeable, above all, that all the ladies wore black dresses. On the other hand, there have been several occasions when, unfortunately, this diplomatic protocol was not followed to the extent that it should have been.
There are very strict rules for this kind of international state celebration. It seems obvious that black should be chosen, but a glossy black color should not be assumed as it has different shades depending on the light. One of the spouses of the Heads of State wore such a dress that looked navy blue in the light.
Our First Lady is very precise when it comes to following the rules of the diplomatic protocol.
So you have to avoid flash, it must be a completely matte thread, deep black, also black matched to shoes or tights. The dress should also be the right length – 7/8, which is the length just above the ankle. They cannot be tight dresses, fitted, very emphasizing the figure, and if it is a fitted dress, it must be in the form of a coat, jacket, or with a peplum that slightly hides our shapes, or it can simply be a dress which is widened from the waist. Another important thing is the headgear. It should be not less than 10 cm in diameter, but also not too big, it is important that it is not a large hat with a brim. The headband on the hair is also not enough. Our First Lady had the right hat and her hairstyle was slightly altered for the hat as well, which was quickly noticed by the media.
Three styles had to be prepared for this occasion. In the first one, the First Lady paid tribute to the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II – it was a double-breasted, overcoat dress with a slightly asymmetrical front, but all according to the classic rules. At the evening party that King Charles III had organized in connection with the funeral, the First Lady wore a simple dress with a jacket. For the main ceremony, i.e. the funeral itself, we proposed a dress resembling a suit with a jacket, which was sewn taking into account all applicable protocol rules.
Diplomatic protocol. Agata Duda cares about it very much
i.pl: Why is it important to follow the dress protocol in such situations?
This is a very high-level celebration. I believe that the higher the rank of the ceremony, the more strictly these rules should be followed. In this way, we express our respect for the person, in this case the deceased Queen Elizabeth II and her successor, but also for the country we came to. Clothing is meant to express our attitude to the circumstances, to the situation, to people involved in this situation.
We are people who stick to the rules and these rules are important to us in relation to such a large celebration, but also in relation to smaller events. Our First Lady is always properly dressed, according to the diplomatic protocol.
Beginning of cooperation with the First Lady
i.pl: What were the circumstances of your cooperation with Agata Kornhauser-Duda?
This collaboration began in 2017. The First Lady saw Alicja Węgorzewska singing at the concert in Jurata. Back then, Alicja Węgorzewska still had very feminine shapes, but in the dress she was wearing, she looked very slim and shapely. I made this outfit literally out of a piece of cloth, in two days, and it looked good enough for the First Lady to notice it. A friend of Jurata, Father Marcin, who recommended me to the First Lady, was also involved in this situation, saying that I have my boutique in this town.
Later I was approached from the President’s Chancellery with a request to provide a few selected stylizations – suits, dresses. The First Lady liked these things, we established a meeting, rules of cooperation and this cooperation continues to this day.
We are very proud in the studio and we feel distinguished by the fact that we can dress the First Lady.
What does the cooperation with the president’s wife look like? Where do the try-ons take place?
i.pl: You mentioned that the First Lady approaches her outfit with great attention to detail, is she therefore a particularly demanding client?
We are lucky to work with very demanding clients, the First Lady is one of them. We treat each client in the same way, we make sure that everything is perfectly matched and sewn. This is what made-to-measure sewing is about, that a specific design, concept is created and there are at least two fittings that allow us to adjust a given item.
Consequently, there is no big discrepancy between normally dealing with clients and working with the First Lady. The only difference is that the fitting is not always done at my Atelier, but often at the Presidential Palace. We cannot meet with the First Lady at any time to discuss various issues, but there is a different method of communication between us – we meet regularly, but not like with a standard client.
This cooperation is very good for me because the First Lady has a very specific style. We know the direction in which we should go when creating a collection of creations for various circumstances. There are no experiments here, no surprises, we are just operating as planned. We implement monthly plans, we know what are the planned celebrations and occasions, we prepare for each trip, official visit, during which the First Lady represents our country and all women and she cares about the right clothes.
These outfits are minimalistic, conservative, because that’s diplomacy, but we are constantly looking for solutions that will introduce an element of modernity into this wardrobe.
Dorota Goldpoint client. “My brand can prepare an outfit for every woman”
i.pl:You also deal with styling of other famous people, they are not always women with perfect proportions, resembling slim models on the catwalks. What clients do you work with and why do these women choose your outfits so eagerly?
Deliberately, as ambassadors of projects, I invited various women, of different ages, with different shapes. It is not difficult to sew something for a shapely, slim, tall girl, but the trick is to create an interesting outfit for a figure that does not have perfect proportions.
My ambassadors are Grażyna Szapołowska, who has a perfect body, but is a mature woman, Anna Korcz, Joanna Kurowska, Irena Santor, and the aforementioned Alicja Węgorzewska.
In this way, I wanted to show that my brand can prepare an outfit for every woman, we do not stigmatize anyone and we do not distinguish anyone. We are a brand that is created out of love for beauty and passion for creation, for every woman.
Big event in Washington. 40 embassies involved in the organization
i.pl:On October 12, Washington will host a large-scale gala of designers of the first ladies and heads of state. The Polish embassy in the USA is also involved in the event. What is the purpose of organizing such an event and what can you expect from it?
This is the first such gala in the history of diplomacy. 40 embassies of various countries in Washington are organizing an event to honor designers sewing for first ladies and heads of state. During the gala, each of the designers will present replicas of two styles. The setting of the entire show, i.e. the choreography of the musician and models, is organized on a professional level, as in a real fashion show. The ambassadors and their wives will be present there. The gala is also charitable. Big names from all over the world will appear on it.
Our dresses are already in Washington. An invitation to an event at which designers and great brands will be known all over the world will be a great honor for us.
Dorota Goldpoint wins Dubai. What does this market look like?
i.pl: Before your visit to the USA, you also participate in the show in Dubai, which is your seventh show in this city. Since this year, you have been associated with Dubai also professionally (office and showroom). Why Dubai? What are the first steps on this market and is it very different from what we see in Europe or in Poland?
I consider Dubai to be an insatiable market that is still open to Europe, to new things (…)
